Sand from the South Pacific
Sand Island, Midway Atoll
South Pacific 1
I had the amazing opportunity to spend a summer on Midway Atoll, right in the middle of the Pacific. From a historical perspective, Midway Atoll is an incredible place; the Battle of Midway changed the tide of WWII. From a biologist's perspective, the area is even more amazing- 22 species of seabirds nest there, including the atoll's most famous species, the Laysan Albatross. The diving is fascinating (especially if you love sharks), the isolation is overwhelming, and the sand is absolutely fantastic!
